    Mathematics

I can split a rectangle into two smaller rectangles to find its area.

Look: 7 by 4 split into 5 rows and 2 rows

    1. Draw a line after 5 rows.
    2. 5 × 4 = 20 and 2 × 4 = 8.
    3. Add the parts: 20 + 8 = 28 square units.

Draw each rectangle. Split the rows as shown. Find each part and add.

    1. 1.

      6 by 7: split into 5 rows and 1 row of 7

    2. 2.

      8 by 9: split into 5 rows and 3 rows of 9

      7 by 6: split into 5 rows and 2 rows of 6

    4. 4.

      9 by 8: split into 5 rows and 4 rows of 8

    Solve the word problem.

    1. 5.

A garden is made of 6 rows of 8 square plots. Each plot is 1 square meter. Nina splits it into 3 rows and 3 rows. Find the area of each part, then the whole garden.

    2. 6.

Why would you split a 7 by 8 rectangle?

Challenge: Split a 6 by 9 rectangle a different way from 5 and 1. Show your work.

I can read a climate map and tell why places have different climates.

    Why Climates Differ

Weather is what the air is like today. Climate is the usual weather in a place over many years. Places closer to the equator are usually warmer. Places near an ocean have milder temperatures, not too hot and not too cold. Tall mountains can block rain clouds, so the land on the far side is often dry. On a climate map, each color stands for a different climate zone.

Write W for weather or C for climate.

    1. 1.

It is snowing in Denver right now.

    2. 2.

Seattle has many rainy days every winter.

    3. 3.

Phoenix is hot and dry most of the year.

    4. 4.

There is a thunderstorm this afternoon.

Climate Chart: find your zone and two others on a climate map. Fill in the table.
