3-PS2-2: Use motion patterns to predict.
Official text
Make observations and/or measurements of an object's motion to provide evidence that a pattern can be used to predict future motion.
What it means for your child
Your child observes and measures motion that repeats, like a pendulum or a bouncing ball, and uses the pattern to predict what happens next.
Try it at home
- Tie a washer to a string to make a pendulum. Count swings in 15 seconds and predict the next count.
- Drop a ball and mark how high it bounces each time. Ask your child to predict the next bounce.
- Watch a swing at the park and talk about the back-and-forth pattern.
