3-5-ETS1-1: Define a design problem.
Official text
Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
What it means for your child
Your child defines a simple design problem by naming what a solution must do (criteria) and its limits on materials, time or cost (constraints).
Try it at home
- Ask your child to design a holder for pencils using only paper and tape.
- Ask, 'What must it do? What are your limits?'
- Talk about a real problem at home that a design could fix.
