    40 points total

Part 1: Division & Fact Families

    11 points

    Draw, write or explain.

    1. 1.

Draw 24 counters. Put them in groups of 8. How many groups are there? Write the division sentence.

      (2 pts)

      Answer: 3 groups; 24 ÷ 8 = 3 (drawing shows 3 groups of 8)

    2. 2.

Write the fact family for 5, 9 and 45.

      (2 pts)

      Answer: 5 × 9 = 45, 9 × 5 = 45, 45 ÷ 5 = 9, 45 ÷ 9 = 5

    3. 3.

      (a) 40 ÷ 5 = ____ (b) 28 ÷ 4 = ____ (c) 30 ÷ 6 = ____ (d) 81 ÷ 9 = ____

      (4 pts)

      Answer: (a) 8 (b) 7 (c) 5 (d) 9

    4. 4.

Nico says 36 ÷ 4 = 8. Use multiplication to check his answer. Is Nico right? If not, what is 36 ÷ 4?

      (3 pts)

      Answer: No. 4 × 8 = 32, not 36. 36 ÷ 4 = 9, because 4 × 9 = 36.

Scoring: Item 1: 1 point for 3 groups and 1 point for the division sentence. Item 2: 2 points for all four facts; 1 point for two or three facts. Item 3: 1 point for each fact. Item 4: 1 point for "no," 1 point for a multiplication check (4 × 8 = 32 or 4 × 9 = 36) and 1 point for 9.

Reteach if needed: Week 10, Week 11. Week 10 Days 1–2 (sharing and grouping), Week 10 Day 4 (fact families) and Week 11 Days 1–4 (division facts from related multiplication facts).

Part 2: Word Problems, Unknowns & Two Steps

    13 points

Solve. Show each step. Write the answer with a word when there is one.

    1. 5.

      Find the unknown number. (a) 7 × ? = 42 (b) ? ÷ 5 = 6

      (2 pts)

      Answer: (a) 6 (b) 30

    2. 6.

A coach shares 56 cones equally among 7 teams. Write an equation with ? for the unknown. How many cones does each team get?

      (2 pts)

      Answer: 56 ÷ 7 = ? (or 7 × ? = 56); 8 cones

    3. 7.

Each bench seats 6 children. How many benches are needed to seat 48 children?

      (2 pts)

      Answer: 8 benches (48 ÷ 6 = 8)

    4. 8.

Ivy saves 6 dollars each week for 7 weeks. Then she spends 15 dollars on a book. How many dollars does she have left? Write an equation for each step. Use a letter for the unknown.

      (3 pts)

      Answer: 27 dollars. For example, 6 × 7 = s, s = 42; 42 − 15 = n, n = 27.

    5. 9.

      (a) 6 + 4 × 5 = ____ (b) (6 + 4) × 5 = ____

      (2 pts)

      Answer: (a) 26 (b) 50

    6. 10.

A school has 529 children. Another school has 264 children. Tess adds and gets 693 children in all. (a) Round each number to the nearest 100 and estimate the sum. (b) Is 693 reasonable? Tell why.

      (2 pts)

      Answer: (a) 500 + 300 = 800 (b) No. 693 is too far from 800. (The exact sum is 793.)

Scoring: Item 1: 1 point for each unknown. Item 2: 1 point for a correct equation and 1 point for 8 cones. Item 3: 2 points for 8 benches; 1 point for the right operation with a fact slip. Item 4: 1 point for each step and 1 point for 27 dollars; if your child writes the steps with ? instead of a letter, take off 1 point. Item 5: 1 point for each part. Item 6: 1 point for the estimate 800 and 1 point for "no" with a reason.

Reteach if needed: Week 12, Week 15. Week 12 Days 2–4 (sharing and grouping word problems; the unknown number), Week 15 Days 1–2 (two steps with letters for unknowns), Week 15 Day 3 (multiply or divide first) and Week 15 Day 4 (estimating to check).

    Part 3: Properties of Multiplication

    9 points

Solve. Show how you used a property.

    1. 11.

Solve 5 × 2 × 6 the easy way. Put in parentheses to show which two factors you multiply first.

      (2 pts)

      Answer: 60; (5 × 2) × 6 = 10 × 6 = 60.

    2. 12.

      Fill in the blanks. 8 × 3 = (5 × 3) + (____ × 3) = ____ + ____ = ____

      (2 pts)

      Answer: 3; 15 + 9 = 24

    3. 13.

      Write the name of the property each equation shows: commutative, associative or distributive. (a) 3 × 9 = 9 × 3 (b) 7 × 3 = (5 × 3) + (2 × 3) (c) (2 × 4) × 3 = 2 × (4 × 3)

      (3 pts)

      Answer: (a) commutative (b) distributive (c) associative

    4. 14.

      (a) 6 × 0 = ____ (b) 1 × 8 = ____ (c) 0 ÷ 5 = ____ (d) 7 ÷ 1 = ____

      (2 pts)

      Answer: (a) 0 (b) 8 (c) 0 (d) 7

Scoring: Item 1: 1 point for a helpful grouping and 1 point for 60. Item 2: 1 point for 3 and 1 point for 15 + 9 = 24. Item 3: 1 point for each name; spelling does not count. Item 4: 2 points if all four are right; 1 point if two or three are right.

Reteach if needed: Week 13. Week 13 Days 1–3 (commutative, associative and distributive properties) and Week 13 Day 4 (rules for 0 and 1).

    Part 4: Patterns & Multiples of 10

    7 points

Use patterns and place value to answer.

    1. 15.

      (a) 5 × 90 = ____ (b) 8 × 70 = ____

      (2 pts)

      Answer: (a) 450 (b) 560

    2. 16.

Find the rule. Then fill in the missing OUT number. IN 4 → OUT 28 IN 6 → OUT 42 IN 9 → OUT ____

      (2 pts)

      Answer: Rule: multiply by 7 (× 7). OUT = 63

    3. 17.

Without multiplying, tell whether each product is even or odd. Then tell how you know for (a). (a) 7 × 3 (b) 9 × 4

      (3 pts)

Answer: (a) odd (b) even. Look for: in 7 × 3 both factors are odd, so the product is odd (21). In 9 × 4 one factor is even, so the product is even (36).

Scoring: Item 1: 1 point for each product. Item 2: 1 point for the rule and 1 point for 63. Item 3: 1 point for each part and 1 point for a reason that uses odd and even factors (or pairing with one left over).

Reteach if needed: Week 16. Week 16 Day 2 (even and odd products), Week 16 Day 3 (multiplying by multiples of 10) and Week 16 Day 4 (in/out tables).
