Scoring Guide: Quarter 4 Review: Reading & Writing

    30 points total

    Part 1: Reading: An Article

    9 points

Read the article. Then answer the questions. You can look back at the article as often as you like.

    1. 1.

Which sentence tells the main idea of the whole article?

      (1 pt)

Answer: Flying in a V helps geese share the work and travel far.

    2. 2.

What does migrating mean? What clue in the article told you?

      (2 pts)

Answer: Traveling to a warmer place for the winter (1). Clue (1): the article explains the word right after it, with the words "which means."

    3. 3.

Why does a goose flying behind another goose not have to flap as hard?

      (1 pt)

Answer: It gets a lift from the rising air behind the wing tips of the goose ahead; the air helps hold it up.

    4. 4.

Under which heading can you read about what happens when the leader gets tired?

      (1 pt)

      Answer: Taking Turns

    5. 5.

Paraphrase this sentence. Say the same idea in your own words. When the leader grows tired, it drops back into the line, and a rested goose moves up to take its place.

      (2 pts)

Answer: Answers vary. Look for: the same idea (1) in the child's own words, not copied (1), such as "A tired front goose goes to the back, and a fresh one flies in front."

    6. 6.

The last sentence says geese can travel farther together than alone. Write two details from the article that support this idea.

      (2 pts)

Answer: Any two (1 each): each goose gets a lift from the bird ahead, so it does not flap as hard; the geese take turns at the front, so they share the hardest job; the V lets each goose see the others; honking helps the flock stay together.

Scoring: 1-point items: 1 if the answer matches the article, in the child's own words or the article's words. The word-meaning item: 1 for the meaning and 1 for the clue. The paraphrase: 1 for keeping the meaning and 1 for using the child's own words. The details item: 1 for each detail from the article.

Reteach if needed: Week 28, Week 29, Week 36. Week 29 Day 3 (working out word meanings, then paraphrasing); Week 29 Day 4 (combining facts under a big idea); Week 28 Day 4 (skimming headings to find facts); Week 36 Day 2 (cause and effect and science words in a text).

Part 2: Research, Reports & Presenting

    7 points

Answer each question about research, reports, talks and scripts.

    1. 7.

Nora's research question is: How do geese find their way when they migrate? Write one smaller question that would help her answer it.

      (1 pt)

Answer: Answers vary. Look for: a question about one part of the big question that can be answered by reading, such as "Do geese use the sun or the stars?" or "Do young geese learn the way from older geese?"

    2. 8.

Nora's note says: front goose works hardest (Wings Over Us, p. 31). What does the part in parentheses tell?

      (1 pt)

Answer: Where the fact came from: the source (the book Wings Over Us) and the page (31).

    3. 9.

Which part of a research report has a hook, the topic and the research question?

      (1 pt)

      Answer: the introduction

    4. 10.

Nora wants a visual that shows where each goose flies in the V and which one is the leader. Which visual is best?

      (1 pt)

      Answer: a labeled diagram

    5. 11.

After Nora's talk, a listener asks, "Why does the leader change?" Answer in a complete sentence. Use a detail from the article.

      (1 pt)

Answer: Answers vary. Look for: one complete sentence with a detail from the article, such as "The leader changes because the front goose works the hardest and gets tired."

    6. 12.

Read these two lines from a script. RANGER KIM (pointing up): Look, the geese are back! OMAR (whispering): Why are they so loud? Which words are stage directions? How should a reader say Omar's line?

      (2 pts)

Answer: Stage directions (1): (pointing up) and (whispering), the words in parentheses. Omar's line (1): in a whisper, in a quiet voice.

Scoring: Each 1-point item: 1 if correct or if the answer fits the 'Look for' note. The note item needs the idea of where the fact came from. The script item: 1 for naming the words in parentheses and 1 for saying the line should be whispered.

Reteach if needed: Week 28, Week 29, Week 30, Week 31, Week 33, Week 34. Week 28 Day 2 (a research question and smaller questions); Week 29 Days 1–2 (notes and recording sources); Week 30 Days 1–2 (parts of a report, the introduction); Week 31 Day 1 (choosing a visual); Week 33 Day 4 (answering audience questions with details); Week 34 Day 1 (script parts and stage directions).

Week 28 (contractions); Week 29 Day 1 (possessives for one owner and more than one owner); Week 31 Day 3 (editing for capitals, usage, punctuation and spelling); Week 33 (oi/oy, ou/ow, aw/au); Week 35 (schwa endings -en, -on, -al, -el).

Part 4: Writing: A Report Paragraph

    4 points

Write one paragraph for a report on your own paper or in the box. You may look back at the article.

    1. 18.

Write a body paragraph that answers this question: How does flying in a V help geese? Use facts from the article in your own words. Begin with a topic sentence, give at least three facts, use at least one linking word (such as also, because, another or so), and end with a closing sentence.

      (4 pts)

Answer: Rubric (4 points): 4 = a topic sentence, at least three correct facts from the article in the child's own words, a linking word, and a closing sentence, in complete sentences; 3 = a topic sentence and three facts, but the closing sentence or the linking word is missing, or one sentence is copied; 2 = two correct facts with a topic or closing sentence, or three facts with neither; 1 = one correct fact, or sentences copied straight from the article; 0 = no response or off topic.

Scoring: Use the 4-point rubric: 4 = topic sentence, three or more correct facts in the child's own words, a linking word and a closing sentence; 3 = topic sentence and three facts with the closing or linking word missing; 2 = two facts with a topic or closing sentence, or three facts with neither; 1 = one fact, or copied sentences; 0 = no response or off topic. Score what is on the page, not neatness. Spelling of words not yet taught does not lower the score.

Reteach if needed: Week 30, Week 32. Week 30 Days 3–4 (body paragraphs with a topic sentence, facts and linking words; conclusions) and Week 32 Day 2 (a strong body paragraph with linking words).
